Take it easy. Don’t book a packed itinerary from day one. Allow yourself a couple of days to recover from the long flight and get used to the time zone and temperature. Cuba is an experience, not just a tourist destination. Try local/independent restaurants and bars and stay in casa particulares, you’ll be surprised of the quality and the level of service found in the emerging private sector.

Nothing really beats Havana, it’s a magic place where everything converges. It’s so vibrant and the music, food, bars, museums and theatres mean you’ll never get bored. Walking the streets of Old Havana is like a trip back in time, soundtracked by some trio playing a Buena Vista song. On a hot day, I like to spend the evening relaxing on the beach in Santa Maria, just a 10-minute drive from Old Havana.
Driving from Matanzas to Trinidad, with lots of interesting stops and an overnight stay in Cienfuegos. We visited a small fishing community, the stunning Zapata swamps and had an amazing dinner at Villa Lagarto in Cienfuegos, an excellent restaurant by the bay. A definite highlight was visiting El Nicho waterfalls, it was August and they felt like an oasis of calm, freshness and pure air.
