10 Night Travel Itinerary

Day 1: Havana

International outbound flight to Havana. Please get in touch if you would like us to arrange your flights. You will be met by a Cuba Direct representative at Havana Airport.

Havana

Few cities boast the life and soul of the sultry showgirl that is Havana. To know Havana is love her – her buzzing street corners, where the bored and the busy-with-gossip congregate; her gorgeous colonial cityscape, her virtuoso musicians and dancers; her antiquated classic cars and her socialist slogans. Havana is at its busiest with tourism and private enterprise since 1959, with a new restaurant, shop, art project or hip private villa opening seemingly every week, regardless of announcements emanating out of the States. There’s never been a better time to join the party.

Day 2: Havana

You will take a guided walking tour of Havana. Your English-speaking guide will detail the history of the city as you walk the streets where some of Havana’s most important historical events took place. Fearsome Spanish fortresses, palatial colonial residences, and Havana’s four centuries-old squares are just some of the highlights.

Day 3: Havana

Day at leisure in Havana.

Day 4: Havana - San José

You will fly from Havana to Costa Rica’s capital city, San José. A representative will meet you at the airport and assist with your private transfer to your hotel.

San José

Though it lacks the natural beauty and colourful wildlife for which Costa Rica is famed, San José is more than just a stop-over. A bustling modern metropolis, most of its buildings date from the post-WW2 era, however, look hard enough and you’ll find grand colonial mansions tucked between the commercial high-rises. Many of these masterpieces have been converted into cultural spaces and the city plays host to countless theatres and museums. Home to the country’s best bars and restaurants, San José is the perfect spot to get acquainted with Costa Rican cuisine.

Day 5: San José - Sarapiquí

Your driver will meet you in the morning to take you to the lush region of Sarapiquí. Here you will stay at a beautiful rainforest lodge immersed in nature. Look for howler monkeys and keel-billed toucans amongst the towering almendro trees.

Sarapiquí

Overflowing with opportunities for adventure, Sarapiquí and its raging river – to which it owes its name – is a haven for kayaking, white-water rafting and wildlife-watching. This stretch of verdant and fertile lowlands was once part of the United Fruit Company’s vast banana holdings and still serves as an important agricultural region. Despite once serving as perhaps the country’s busiest transport hub, Sarapiquí boasts some of the last remaining primary rainforest in Costa Rica as well as 400 species of bird, 450 species of tree and over 100 species of mammals.

Day 6: Sarapiquí

Day at leisure in Sarapiquí.

Day 7: Sarapiquí - Tortuguero

You will travel from Sarapiquí to the lush jungle of Tortuguero on Costa Rica's northern Caribbean coast. Your journey commences at El Ceibo Restaurant where you will enjoy a traditional Costa Rican breakfast and join the rest of the group travelling with you to Tortuguero.

Tortuguero

A dense jungle of winding canals, howling monkeys and squawking macaws, Tortuguero is a natural wonderland only accessible by plane or boat. The national park encompasses eleven different habitats including rainforest, swamps, beaches, mangrove forests and lagoons and is the most important breeding ground of the green sea turtle. Considering it seclusion, Tortuguero Village is a surprisingly lively hub of activity with a strong Afro-Caribbean culture, particularly evident in its gastronomy.

Day 8: Tortuguero

You will enjoy a guided boat tour at the Tortuguero National Park. Floating along the interconnected channels, you can enjoy picturesque views and spot exotic wildlife. In the afternoon, a guided tour of Tortuguero town will provide an insight into the lives of the local people. (Park entrance fee not included, $15 per person and to be paid in the park).

Day 9: Tortuguero - Arenal

After lunch you will join the shared scenic transfer to your next stop, Arenal.

Arenal

This idyllic oasis – home to forest, waterfalls and the magnificent (dormant!) Arenal Volcano – is the perfect place to enjoy nature. Hiking, cycling, horseriding, whitewater rafting and ziplining can be followed by a relaxing bath in the region’s geothermal waters. A massive 75% of Costa Rica’s 850 bird species can be found in the Arenal Volcano National Park along with sloths, white-faced capuchin monkeys, coati and much more. Though touristy, La Fortuna is friendly town well-worth a visit.

Day 10: Arenal

Day at leisure in Arenal.

Day 11: Arenal - Juan Santamaría International Airport

You will transfer to San José's international airport. After experiencing the many wonders of Costa Rica, it is time to say "hasta luego" to this very special corner of the world.
