Excursion details:
Only three hours away from Havana, Vinales offers you an example of a well preserved
colonial settlement, surrounded by a immense valley characterized by its "Mogotes"
or limestone pillars formed millions of years ago.
The tour to Vinales starts at 8:00 am with a first 2 hour drive to Soroa, the first
stop. Soroa is a valley 250 mts above sea level named after two Basque brothers
who amassed a fortune with their coffee plantations. The main attractions of this
area are the Salton waterfall on the Manantiales river and the Orchid garden with
more than 700 species that you can enjoy in the Cuba Direct Soroa tour.
The first stop in Vinales is at the Hotel Los Jazmines observation point with a
180 degree view of the valley. Here, you can admire the beauty of a Cuban tobacco
plantation landscape. This is also a great opportunity to have a soft drink after
the road.
Not far from los Jazmines, we will take you to La Cueva del Indio (the Indio cave),
a place that you should not miss. This cave, discovered in 1920) is located in the
San Vicente valley. The first part has to be made on foot through its main tunnel
until a motor boat takes you up the underground San Vicente river for about a quarter
of a mile.
As a tribute to the million year old pillars known as Mogotes, Cuban artist Leovigildo
Gonzalez, pupil of Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, painted the Mural de la Prehistoria
in the face of one of those geological formations. The Mural de la Prehistoria represents
the evolution of live on earth from ammonites to Homo Sapiens.
The next stop will be at the Palenque de los Cimarrones. This attraction can be
found at the Cueva de San Miguel which used to shelter runaway African slaves (Cimarrones)
when they escaped from their abusive masters and slave hunters (Rancheadores).
The last visit will be to a emblem place of the Pinar del Rio region: the Casa de
Tabaco (curing barn). This is where most of the magic in the tobacco production
take place. Here, you will receive a full explanation of the process: the plantation,
the harvest, the curing, the grading and you will witness the rolling of a Cuban
cigar.
Before going back to havana, you will have a picnic lunch.
The tour is private. It starts at 8:00 am and will last approximately 10 hours.
All visits with specialised English speaking guide.
