Excursion details:
Our rep will call you a few days before to re-check everything.
You will meet him/her at a tour start point or in a mutually convenient place to
start the tour at 08:00 hrs.
You will first enjoy a 1h walking tour along the Old Havana quarters including the
most important squares and fortresses of the area. Founded in 1514 and later appointed
as the second capital of the Island, the city was surrounded by a wall and fortified
to protect it from the attacks of pirates and buccaneers. The wall was demolished
in ... but the parts of it and the squares and fortresses can be visited during
this tour.
You will be picked up at the Plaza de Armas by an Old-American car to take you to
a 15 min photo visit to the Capitol building and then to a panoramic ride along
the Havana sea wall drive. The Capitol building was inaugurated in 1929 by dictator
Gerardo Machado in a loose imitation to the one in Washington DC as the home of
government until 1959. Today it houses the Ministry of Science and Technology.
The next stop will be at the Maqueta de la Habana where you will receive an explanation
of urban development of the city and the tour will continue with another panoramic
ride along 5th avenue (Miramar) to Colon Cemetery which has more than 500 major
mausoleums, chapels, and family vaults.
The cemetery was designed in the 1860s by the Spanish architect Calixto de Loira
based on the layouts of Roman military camps, and was built between 1871 to 1886
to replace the small Cemetery of Espada.
The tour will continue with a short visit to Plaza de la Revolucion and then you
will be taken to Callejon de Hamel where you will receive an explanation of Afro
Cuban cults in Cuban culture. The Callejon de Hamel is probably the biggest open-air
Afro Cuban sanctuary designed by naive painter Salvador Gonzalez.
This stop will be followed by a visit to a completely off-the-beaten track area
of Havana called "La Vibora" including its parks and churches where we
will talk about the architecture which developed here around the 1940-50's.
At noon, you will enjoy a Cuban meal at a private restaurant including meat, salad,
dessert, coffee and a soft drink, juice or beer.
Afterwards, the guide will show you the old neighbourhood called "El Calvario"
and finally the Ernest Hemingway museum, where the American writer lived for almost
20 years, in the outskirts of the city to finish the tour taking you back to your
hotel.
The tour is private and will be in old-American car. It will last approximately
6 hours.
